The Pearls of Business – Book Release

2021-03-03T18:04:07+00:00 December 30th, 2020|

Jay Newkirk, a part time GES, Inc. employee has written and published a business book The Pearls of Business. Newkirk, a partner, and GES’s President Phil Wendling built a government contracting company to a staff of 1,000 and an annual revenue of $100 million, which was no small feat. But that’s exactly what they did, culminating in a successful liquidity event.

In book one in The Pearls of Business series, Jay shares with other entrepreneurs and business leaders the principles and practices they employed so readers, too, can successfully grow and develop their businesses. With a focus on entrepreneurs and leaders doing business with the federal government, Jay’s insights and insider tips are substantiated with quotes by diverse thought leaders, which, when applied to the phases a business undergoes as it’s growing, become the pearls of business.

NVSBE Event – December 9th 10th & 11th, 2019

2020-01-30T01:23:14+00:00 January 30th, 2020|

A topic that comes up frequently among those of us in the government contracting sector is the value of attending conferences and concern about getting a return on the investment. Phil Wendling, President & CEO and Jay Newkirk, Corporate Strategy VP of Government Energy Solutions, Inc. both attended the National Veterans Small Business Engagement (NVSBE) held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN, this past December. This well-planned event focused on veteran-owned small businesses and in fact was very valuable.

The VA has decided to support veteran-owned small businesses by assuring that 15% of their annual contracting dollars go to veteran-owned businesses. The conference was structured in such a way so as to encourage these companies to attend.

The NVSBE is the premier and largest federal procurement event of its kind and enables business networking among procurement-ready suppliers. This year’s event was focused on procurement opportunities pertaining to Information Technology Services and Medical & Specialty Supplies Services.

The event was structured as a very large “Matchmaking” event, with 2,500 attendees. The registration process required profiling the company you were representing in sufficient enough detail so that the event facilitators’ software could find “company to company matches” and “company to VA representatives” matches.

So during the registration process attendees could access the VA software system and create a schedule for attending Basic Opportunities Sessions and could schedule follow-up small “round table” engagements with VA Reps with opportunities, including potential colleague companies that could become partners in order to pursue an opportunity.

It was a whirlwind two days with learning sessions occurring simultaneously with ongoing networking. The event offered attendees extraordinary opportunities to meet VA contract managers and contract specialists to discuss specific upcoming contracts while simultaneously networking with other companies that could become teaming partners.

We came away from the event with valuable VA representatives’ contact information and a stack of company business cards. It was such an influential event that it had the effect of redirecting the company I was representing to adjust their new business development strategy for 2020.

We can’t recommend this positive experience enough. The hashtag used on Twitter was #NetworkConnectGrow and this theme was evident throughout the conference. We plan to attend again next year.

GES’s Roger Herdy, C.E.M., was a speaker at the recent Power Grid Defense Symposium held in Huntsville, Alabama. This symposium and conference was about the status and challenges of the electrical power grids that supply our nation. He was asked to speak about GES’s involvement in a group called Energy Huntsville (where he is Director of the Membership and Sponsorship committee), which was started by the Mayor of Huntsville to help bring business to town (GES’s Jay Newkirk is also the Executive Director for Energy Huntsville).

Roger was also asked to talk about some of the electrical power generation technology for “Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Brayton Cycle” where GES has been working with Sandia National Laboratories over the last several years, and its applicability to resilient power grids.

GES and the 5th Annual Amy Herdy Texas Hold ‘Em Cancer Cure Tournament

2017-08-30T15:37:32+00:00 August 30th, 2017|

In honor of my sister Amy Herdy who lives in Washington State and is recovering from her battle with cancer, I annually organize a Poker Tournament (see www.acstexasholdem.org). This was my 5th year, and my charity of choice was METAvivor, who funds research to cure metastatic breast cancer (see www.metavivor.org). METAvivor is dedicated to the specific fight of women and men living with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. At the time of METAvivor’s founding, no organization was dedicated to funding research for the disease and no patient groups were speaking out about the dearth of stage 4 cancer research.  While more and more people have taken up the cry for more stage 4 research, METAvivor remains the sole US organization dedicated to awarding annual stage 4 breast cancer research. I picked this charity in honor of GES employee Elizabeth Howard, who is battling stage 4 cancer. The tournament was held on August 26, 2017 and was hosted by AEgis Technologies.

With the theme being a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament, many businesses and organizations donate door prizes such as gift baskets, cards, free services, etc. GES stood up to the plate and was a Bronze Sponsor. The GES employees who played are shown, along with shot of some of the action where you can see the banners of the sponsors.

We raised over $4600 this year for METAvivor.
